Windward Code Wars — one of the top student coding championships in the world — is where teams from top universities around the globe have just eight hours to analyze a problem, create a solution, and test it against the entries of the other programming experts. Hundreds of teams from 22 universities spent February 1, 2014, creating an A.I. character that would battle it out against other A.I. characters in a previously undisclosed programming game.
“Code Wars rewards collaborative design, is freshman-friendly, and gives computer science students a chance to represent their school in a really challenging intellectual competition,” said David Thielen, founder and CTO of Windward. “It’s the most exciting programming contest in the world.”
Additional participating schools included: College of William and Mary, Colorado School of Mines, Colorado State University, Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Hartnell College, Harvey Mudd College, Penn State – University Park, Princeton University, Purdue University – West Lafayette, San Jose State University, St.Petersburg Polytechnical University, Universidad de las Ciencias Informáticas, University of Alberta, University of Central Florida, University of Colorado-Boulder, University of Maryland College Park, University of Toronto, University of Utah, and University of Victoria.
Code Wars is created and run by Windward, the reporting and document generation software company. It is also sponsored by Hewlett Packard, JetBrains and Salesforce. Every student on the winning team received an HP laptop, and every student on each school’s first place team received free copies of JetBrains software. Plus, all participants were fueled by food and drink provided by Salesforce and received free copies of Windward AutoTag and the Windward development server.
“We wish we had another year at the school to be able to participate next year,” said one Code Wars participant. “This was a thrilling experience indeed!”
