Profile: Ryan Fligg, Sales Engineer
The next time you see one of your requests incorporated into the Windward Engine or find yourself using a new AutoTag feature that better helps your company meet its goals, Ryan Fligg is one of the people to thank.
Ryan, who has been with Windward since 2006 as a sales engineer and an IT specialist, was named product manager in December. Driven by a desire to help design customer solutions, he now works on the future vision of Windward offerings, helps create the product roadmap, responds to customer requests, and communicates what Windward is doing and where it’s headed.
And he does it all remotely from his home in Germany, eight time zones away from the company headquarters in Boulder, Colo.
“I have to be disciplined, set a schedule, and be prepared for the influx of email at the end of the day and first thing in the morning,” Ryan says. “The challenges of working remotely became really apparent when I had meetings online. It’s hard to read body language on the phone. But I’m figuring it out now how to make this work, and the webcam has been great!”
It’s even more impressive that Ryan has mastered telecommuting when you learn he treks to Colorado several times a year even after his numerous travel disasters in the past. Mishaps include:
- Waiting in a small jet on an airport runway, ready to take off, when the wing falls off the plane. (Yes, you read that right.)
- Driving across Nebraska in a car with brand new tires and the tire gets a flat — in the middle of a blizzard.
- Traveling on a family vacation only to be in a tent blown 20 feet in the air when a tornado hits. The group is safe, but the next day Ryan eats too fast and ends up being driven two hours to a hospital to have a fish bone removed from his throat.
If you have a product suggestion for Ryan — or even some travel tips — feel free to email him.
